Pilgrim Paths Celebration Walk – March 26th 2016
Join us on March 26th, Easter Saturday 2016 as we retrace the footsteps of St. Declan over the scenic Knockmealdown Mountains on the border of Tipperary and Waterford. St. Declan’s Way is an ancient pilgrimage route linking the 5th century monastery of St. Declan in Ardmore, County Waterford with Cashel in County Tipperary.
To mark the third annual National Pilgrim Paths celebration (which has now developed from Pilgrim Paths Day to become Pilgrim Paths Week), Knockmealdown Active is organising a walk along part of the St. Declan’s Way route.
Details:
Distance: The Melleray to Goatenbridge walk is 14 km long and will take about 3 hours to complete. It involves a gentle height ascension of 330 metres over the Knockmealdown Mountains.
Time: The walk will commence at 11 am on Saturday Martch 26th 2016 in Mount Melleray Abbey, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford. Walkers will assemble at Goatenbridge, at 9.30 am from where they will get a bus to Mount Melleray – busses will depart at 10am. Please allow plenty of time before the bus departs (booking is in advance, please see below).
At 11am the walkers will take the route from Mount Melleray, following St. Declan’s original footsteps over over Bearna Cloch an Buideál (Bottleneck Pass) back to Goatenbridge where there will be light refreshments for all participants.
Walkers should have appropriate footwear (preferrably walking boots) and waterproof gear. Walk leaders will be on hand on the day.
Note: This is a led walk, for insurance purposes it is important that all walkers stay within the group for the duration of the event. The event is subject to weather conditions, in case of poor visibility on the mountain on the day in question.
Cost: €20 which covers walk leaders, bus transfer from Melleray to Goatenbridge and light refreshments on return. Participants should bring any meals, snacks and drinks they require during the event.
Note: Booking Closes at 6pm on Friday March 25th so that we can calculate numbers for bus transport.
